Ullapool Community Trust set up Lochbroom Woodfuels to create a continuous local supply of woodfuel, but also to create training and employment opportunities for young people. We are delighted to have launched Workin’ Wood, our youth project, in 2015.
Workin’ Wood will support young people to access training, work experience, employment and volunteering in the local area. We will create a variety of opportunities so young people can learn in a way which suits them. There’ll be opportunities to conserve the local environment, enjoy the outdoors, gain certificates, build up skills and confidence, learn about entrepreneurship and get support to move on.
Since January, Workin’ Wood has already seen three trainees start in employment with Lochbroom Woodfuels and has supported five young people on part-time work placements. We've also provided opportunities for our trainees to do a variety of courses including first aid + forestry, chainsaw training, fork lift truck training and the European Computer Driving Licence.
Over the rest of the year we are working in partnership with Highlife Highland to jointly deliver summer holiday activities. We're also working with pupils at Ullapool High School to help them gain skills and experience to get ready for work in rural industries. Opportunities to volunteer will be available during the year and we will also continue to offer work placements to young people at high school or who have recently left school.
