There is a lot of good information available on the internet about using firewood. Here are some of our favourites:
Use Green Heat has a lot of useful information about planning a woodfuel installation, stacking firewood, and cost and kWh output of split logs compared with other fuels.
Use Woodfuel has good information on logs and log boilers, as well large scale biomass systems and supply chains.
Forestry Commission Guide to Choosing and Drying Logs ... the title says it all, really!
This video shows how to stack firewood in a stable log pile. The demonstrator builds his pile on a grid of 4"x4"s; he could also have used a palette raised off the ground on blocks. In our west Highland climate, it would be a good idea to tie a tarpaulin over the finished wood pile, leaving two sides uncovered for further air drying.
Alternatively, you could build a rudimentary log store using recycled palettes, as this video demonstrates.
