Over the school summer holidays Lochbroom Woodfuels ran a programme of events for young people of high school age to go outdoors and enjoy their local environment. This provides young people with activities over the summer period, where they can explore nearby woodland, beaches or other places of beauty or interest to learn about nature nearby, have fun in the outdoors and contribute to conserving the environment.
We ran events on Wednesday during the summer in conjunction with Highlife Highland. Activities lasted the whole day and included exploring rock pools on the beach with a countryside ranger or learning bushcraft in community woodlands.
On Fridays a group of young people, selected with the help of Ullapool High School came on activities with us to explore the outdoors and learn about local wildlife. We have visited Culag Wood, where we went looking for signs of pine martens and learned how to safely build a campfire; Achmelvich Beach where we explored rockpools and the found the 'secret castle'; Corrieshalloch Gorge where we went on a guided walk with Vickii the ranger; and Ullapool Riverside where we went geocaching and river dipping.
